Rahul Gandhi has accused the BJP government and the Lt Governor of hurting Jammu’s economy, which used to support a smooth flow of products from the Valley to the rest of India. As the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, he promised that the INDIA alliance would gather its full strength in Parliament and protest if the BJP does not restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir after the current assembly elections.
At a public rally in Jammu, Gandhi said the people of Jammu and Kashmir faced serious injustice when the state was split into two union territories in 2019. This was his third visit to the region in about three weeks, after trips to Banihal and Dooru on September 4 and Surankote and Central-Shalteng on September 23. When he arrived in Jammu on Wednesday, he met with professionals at a hotel before speaking at the rally at JK Resort Ground.
Gandhi emphasized his commitment to restoring statehood, saying, “This has never happened in India before—that statehood has been taken away and turned into a union territory.” He assured everyone that if the BJP does not restore statehood, the INDIA alliance would put pressure on the government in Parliament and through public protests.
He claimed the removal of statehood was meant to benefit outsiders through the Lt Governor while ignoring local people. Gandhi stressed that restoring statehood is essential for the future of Jammu and Kashmir, calling it “your right.” He also criticized how the government treats small and medium businesses across India.
Gandhi accused the government of supporting big companies like Ambani and Adani, saying that measures like GST and demonetization are designed to help them. He called the ‘Make in India’ initiative ‘make in Adani,’ claiming that most contracts go to Adani.
