Panic on an Air India plane that had been en route from Phuket, Thailand to New Delhi when it received a bomb threat, sparked off a huge security operation.
In the case of Air India, it was AI-379, which had taken off from Phuket International Airport and was flying to the capital of India. Shortly after takeoff, a note of bomb threat was found in one of the lavatories in the aircraft, reports said. As usual in aviation, the pilot crew notified air traffic and elected to return to Phuket, as a precautionary measure.
The plane had been found to be making a turn in the Andaman Sea, and it landed in safety at the Phuket Airport, according to flight tracking data. When the aircraft approached the airport for landing, its authorities and security and emergency response officials were put on high alert.
All 156 people on board were safely evacuated from the aircraft without any injuries. The police then went to great lengths to check the aircraft and the luggage of the passengers for explosives or suspicious materials.
Several hours of security checks and investigations were instituted as a result of the bomb threat. After a detailed search, however, officials said they didn’t detect any explosive device or suspicious object on the plane. This flight was subsequently declared safe.
Investigators also interviewed a number of people during the investigation into the origin of the threat. Police are continuing it’s investigation, looking for who may have placed the note and whether it was intentional or a hoax.
The incident has become another reminder to the aviation industry of the dangers that can result from a bomb threat hoax. Indeed, even if the threats ultimately turn out to be baseless, it is the duty of the airlines and security agencies to accept that the warning is true until it is demonstrated to the contrary. These events frequently lead to emergency landings, disruption to operations, financial losses and high passenger stress.
The incident falls at a time of heightened scrutiny on aviation security in the world. The increase in false bomb threats in recent years has added another layer of stress on the airline industry and airport authorities, both in terms of keeping passengers safe and ensuring the efficient running of the airport. Experts in the industry say that the false bomb threat incidents have increased in recent years and airlines and airports are finding it difficult to keep passengers safe while still maintaining the smooth operation of the airport.
A typical international flight soon turned into a frightening experience for the passengers of the flight. Authorities reportedly evacuated passengers to ensure their safety and provided assistance, with many passengers remaining calm during the evacuation.
Fortunately, the aircraft landed safely, explosives were not found and there were no injuries reported. But the incident is a reminder of the need to take measures to protect aviation and take strict action against fake threats.
As investigations continue, authorities are likely to analyze all evidence to see how it originated and whether or not charges will be brought for any crime committed.
The incident once again has raised fears about aviation security and the proliferation of fake threats that have caused chaos in air travel globally.
