Videos and pictures being widely spread on social media claimed that soldiers of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) had pushed deep into the Taksing region of Arunachal Pradesh and had set up new camps. The posts garnered much social media anxiety and discussion. But the Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check unit had strongly refuted the claim as “Fake”.
The PIB clarified in an official statement that the videos being shared are not from the India-China border and have nothing to do with the statement that India was being invaded by China. The government advised against believing or sharing unverifiable information on national security. The clarification follows a series of reports in the past few days based on satellite images of China’s infrastructure and road building in its territory near the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
The reports were speculated over online, with some social media users incorrectly stating that a Chinese army had intruded into Indian soil. The Indian Army has denied the claim by the Chinese military that it has setup camps 60 km inside Arunachal Pradesh, saying the information was “baseless”. There has never been any official proof of such a massive encroachment of Indian territory, authorities have said. The recent fact-check is a reminder that it’s crucial to check information before sharing it online, especially when it comes to matters of national security. Police have urged the public to only turn to official government sources for updates and to not help spread misinformation that may cause unnecessary panic.
