India achieved a notable milestone in the World Test Championship (WTC) by defeating Bangladesh by 7 wickets in the second Test in Kanpur on October 1. This victory secured a 2-0 series win and solidified India’s lead at the top of the WTC standings. Despite challenges such as two days of rain and limited play on the first day, India delivered an impressive all-round performance.
With this win, India has eight victories, two losses, and one draw in the WTC, accumulating 98 points and a points percentage of 74.24%. They are now strong contenders to add to their points in upcoming matches against New Zealand.
In a gesture of sportsmanship, Indian star Virat Kohli gifted his bat to former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan, acknowledging his remarkable Test career. Shakib has indicated that the upcoming series against South Africa may be his last at home, citing safety concerns related to ongoing political unrest in Bangladesh.
Shakib, who has been part of the parliament since January, has faced challenges due to recent violent protests in Bangladesh, following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He expressed hope that he would not face any issues upon returning home.
In the second Test match, Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal’s outstanding performance, scoring 51 runs, was key to India’s victory. The match ended with Kohli (29*) and Rishabh Pant (4*) at the crease.
Bangladesh struggled during their innings, losing wickets early and finishing with a score of 146 in their third innings. Indian bowlers Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ravichandran Ashwin each took three wickets, while Akash Deep claimed one.
With this series win, India continues to showcase their strength in the WTC as they aim for a third consecutive final appearance.
