The political landscape in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir is heating up as the assembly elections approach. The BJP announced its first list of 67 candidates for Haryana on Wednesday, including the surprising move of fielding Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini from the Ladwa seat instead of Karnal. The party has also awarded poll tickets to several new entrants. The Congress is expected to release its first list of candidates today, and the AAP and Congress are in talks regarding seat-sharing arrangements.
In Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress and National Conference (NC) have formed an alliance, with NC contesting 51 seats and Congress running in 32. The PDP has ruled out an alliance with the BJP. Rahul Gandhi, kickstarting the Congress campaign in Jammu and Kashmir, stated that restoring statehood to J&K would be a priority for the INDIA bloc if it comes to power at the Centre, should the Modi government fail to address this issue post-elections.
During rallies in the Dooru and Banihal assembly constituencies, Gandhi criticized the Lieutenant Governor appointed by the Centre, accusing him of acting like a “21st-century king” and favoring outsiders over local residents.
The Haryana assembly election is scheduled for October 5, while Jammu and Kashmir will hold its polls in three phases: September 18, September 25, and October 1. Vote counting for both states will take place on October 8.
