On Thursday, the Supreme Court began hearing the bail plea filed by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, challenging his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the excise policy case. This comes after the Delhi High Court extended his judicial custody until September 11. Kejriwal is contesting the High Court’s decision, which upheld his arrest by the CBI.
CBI’s Allegations Against Kejriwal
– The CBI filed its fourth supplementary chargesheet on July 30, naming Kejriwal, Satyendar Jain, Amit Arora, Vinod Chauhan, Ashish Mathur, and P. Sarath Reddy as accused.
– The chargesheet alleges that Kejriwal is a key conspirator in the case, with alleged connections to the South group, which includes figures such as K. Kavitha, Raghav Magunta, Arun Pillai, Butchibabu Gorantla, P. Sarath Reddy, Abhishek Boinpally, and Benoy Babu.
– Kejriwal, a 55-year-old leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was initially arrested by the anti-money laundering agency on March 21, following the Delhi High Court’s denial of his request for interim protection from arrest. This arrest has notably impacted Delhi’s political scene and heightened tensions between the Union government and the AAP.
– He was later taken into custody by the CBI on June 26 at the Delhi Rouse Avenue Court and was placed in judicial custody on June 29.
– Although the Supreme Court granted Kejriwal interim bail in the Enforcement Directorate (ED) case on July 12, he remains in Tihar Jail due to his ongoing arrest by the CBI.
