Airtel has launched India’s first AI-powered spam detection tool to help customers deal with spam calls and messages. Recently, unwanted promotional calls and messages from unregistered marketers have become a big problem.
The new tool will alert Airtel customers in real-time about suspected spam calls and SMSes. It is free and will be automatically activated for all Airtel users, so they don’t need to request it or download an app. Gopal Vittal, Managing Director and CEO of Bharti Airtel, mentioned that they have spent the last year developing this solution to address the spam issue effectively.
The AI system has already identified around 100 million potential spam calls and 3 million spam SMSes every day. Airtel’s in-house data scientists created this solution, which uses a special algorithm to mark calls and messages as “Suspected SPAM.” The tool also warns customers about harmful links in SMSes by scanning every message in real-time against a database of blacklisted URLs.
Additionally, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recently mandated that all service providers stop promotional calls from unregistered telemarketers to reduce the number of spam calls.
