IIT Kanpur, established in 1959, ranks 5th in the NIRF 2024, highlighting its strong academic and research reputation. In contrast, IIT Bhilai, inaugurated in 2016, is still building its profile and currently ranks 73rd in the same rankings. Despite the difference in their establishment years, both IITs are important in the field of engineering education and research in India. However, a closer examination of their placement records reveals significant differences in average salaries, registration, and placement outcomes. IIT Kanpur has maintained its reputation with an impressive average salary of Rs 26.27 lakh per annum during the 2023-24 placement season. This reflects a consistent increase over the years, underscoring its strong industry connections and the high demand for its graduates. On the other hand, IIT Bhilai, although newer, has shown steady progress. The average salary for the 2023 placement season was Rs 14 lakh per annum, with the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) branch reporting an even higher average of Rs 18.93 lakh per annum. While these figures are commendable, they still delay behind those of IIT Kanpur. IIT Kanpur’s well-established placement system is evident from the 989 offers received during the first phase of the 2023-24 placement season, with 913 students, including those with Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs), securing positions. The institute’s high placement percentage has been consistently maintained, further solidifying its standing among the top IITs in India. In contrast, IIT Bhilai, despite its recent inception, has shown marked improvement in its placement statistics. The 2021-22 placement season saw 107 out of 119 registered students placed, indicating a growing success rate. The trend continued in 2023, with the CSE branch achieving a notable placement percentage of 77.78%. As the institute matures, its placement outcomes are expected to improve even further. IIT Kanpur’s longstanding industry connections have attracted top recruiters like Microsoft, Samsung, and Goldman Sachs. The first day of the 2023-24 placement season alone saw 485 job offers, showcasing the institute’s strong position in the placement domain. IIT Bhilai, although newer, has also established significant industry ties, particularly in internships. In 2023, over 90 internship offers were extended, with companies like NVIDIA, Intuit, and Trilogy participating. These internships often lead to pre-placement offers, reflecting the institute’s growing industry reputation.
While IIT Kanpur continues to lead in engineering placements with higher average salaries and placement rates, IIT Bhilai is rapidly making progress. The younger institute’s continuous improvement in placement statistics and industry connections indicates a promising future as it further develops its reputation in the competitive landscape of Indian engineering education.
