Two men, Rajat Bhattacharya and Giridhari Roy, were arrested in Siliguri, West Bengal, for threatening and harassing two young men from Bihar who came to take an exam. The Bagdogra police made the arrests on Thursday after a video of the incident went viral.
In the video, the Bihari students were sleeping when a group of men barged in and asked if they could speak Bengali. When one student said no, the group, claiming to be from the Intelligence Bureau (IB), started yelling at them and demanded to see their documents.
The police acted after a complaint was filed, leading to the arrest of the two men.
The incident has drawn criticism from the BJP. Union Minister Giriraj Singh accused the West Bengal government of not protecting its citizens and asked why students from Bihar were being mistreated. He pointed out that while some groups receive protection, Indian students are being harassed.
Union Minister Chirag Paswan also condemned the attack, calling it very unfortunate. He questioned why the opposition was quiet about the situation and urged Bihar’s Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, to investigate and take action against the culprits. Paswan stressed that it is unacceptable for students to face such treatment just for taking an exam.
