On September 24, Ryaga Krishnaiah, a member of the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) in the Rajya Sabha, announced his resignation. He is the third leader to leave the party following its poor performance in the recent Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.
The YSRCP accused Krishnaiah of collaborating with Nara Chandrababu Naidu, the Chief Minister and leader of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). YSRCP leaders P Anil Kumar Yadav and K Karumuri Nageswar Rao expressed their disappointment over his departure, claiming that Naidu was attempting to buy off opposition leaders. They emphasized that such tactics would not weaken the YSRCP and warned that the public would respond strongly in future elections.
Yadav and Rao further stated that Naidu’s alleged actions were destabilizing the state and undermining democracy. They recalled how former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy had given Krishnaiah the Rajya Sabha position with the expectation that he would advocate for the welfare of backward classes, despite the party having many capable leaders.
In his resignation statement, Krishnaiah mentioned that he has been working to increase quotas for backward classes in local bodies and other related issues. He noted that he felt he was being viewed primarily as a YSR Congress leader. His resignation adds to a trend of departures from the YSRCP, which recently saw two other Rajya Sabha members, Mopidevi Venkataramana Rao and Beedha Mastan Rao Yadav, also resign. After Krishnaiah’s exit, the YSRCP now has nine members in the Rajya Sabha.
