On Tuesday, the Assam cabinet approved land for the Railway Ministry to double the tracks in the Azara-Kamakhya section via Goalpara, according to state minister Jayanta Malla Baruah. The cabinet also approved salary payments for over 130 teachers in the Karbi Anglong district.
During a press briefing, Baruah explained that the cabinet sanctioned eight bighas of government land for the railway project, and local consultations were held beforehand. He noted that 131 teachers had been appointed by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) without prior approval from the state government or the finance department. The cabinet has now cleared these appointments, contingent on the candidates meeting basic criteria set by the Hills Area Department.
Additionally, the cabinet approved the re-engagement of 451 part-time faculty members in various engineering colleges and polytechnics for regular positions.
The cabinet also granted over ₹150 crore for the construction of three polytechnics in Hajo, Majuli, and Tingkhong. To help reduce dropout rates, it approved the purchase of bicycles for Class 9 students in secondary government and provincialized schools for the 2024-25 academic year. This initiative will cost ₹148.55 crore and provide bicycles to 323,640 students.
Lastly, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on X that the cabinet approved a proposal to adjust the pay scales for Computor Grade II, Grade I, and Head Computor positions under the Directorate of Land Records and Survey, addressing long-standing pay inequalities between these roles.
