News Agency ANI has taken legal action against the creators of the recent Netflix series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack. The lawsuit demands the removal of four episodes from the series, following allegations that the show altered Pakistani Muslim names to Hindu code names.
ANI’s lawsuit contends that the series incorporates footage of notable figures, such as former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, General Pervez Musharraf, and various terrorists, without securing proper licensing.
According to Bar and Bench, ANI’s legal representative, Advocate Sidhant Kumar, argued that the unauthorized use of footage in the series has harmed ANI’s reputation. The series has faced criticism for allegedly minimizing Pakistan’s role in the hijack and purportedly acting as a public relations tool for the Pakistani spy agency ISI.
Kumar noted that while the producers had sought permission to use the footage in 2021, no agreement was reached. He stressed that the unauthorized use of ANI’s footage, including material bearing the ANI logo, represents trademark infringement. The lawsuit claims that four of the series’ six episodes extensively feature ANI’s footage, including exclusive content from Pakistan.
Justice Mini Pushkarna heard the case today and has issued a notice to the producers. The court has instructed that responses to ANI’s application for interim relief be submitted within two days. The matter is set for further hearing on Friday.
