Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced he will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday at Trump Tower in New York at 9:45 AM. This meeting follows Zelenskyy’s discussions with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in Washington, where they talked about strengthening Ukraine’s position in its ongoing war with Russia.
Trump said during a press conference, “It’s a shame what’s happening in Ukraine—so many deaths and destruction. It’s a horrible thing.” However, NBC News reported that Trump had previously decided not to meet with Zelenskyy. He also criticized the Ukrainian president, claiming Zelenskyy made negative comments about him during a recent event in North Carolina.
Trump’s views on Ukraine have been controversial. He has criticized U.S. assistance to Ukraine and praised Russian President Vladimir Putin. In contrast, President Biden has reaffirmed strong U.S. support for Ukraine, recently announcing a new package of weapons and nearly $8 billion in aid.
During his meeting with Biden, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for U.S. support, noting the two nations have stood together since the beginning of the Russian invasion. Zelenskyy shared his “Victory Plan” with Biden, discussing strategies to strengthen it and coordinate efforts for the next steps.
Biden expressed his commitment to Ukraine, stating, “Today, President Zelenskyy and I discussed strengthening Ukraine’s position on the battlefield. Two things are clear: Ukraine will win this war, and the U.S. will continue to stand by them.”
Zelenskyy also discussed the Victory Plan with Vice President Harris, emphasizing the importance of coordination between the two countries. He highlighted the need to protect Ukrainian families and end the war, thanking America for its ongoing support.
Additionally, the Department of Defense announced a new security assistance package for Ukraine, committing $2.4 billion to provide air defense, unmanned aerial systems, and other military support to help Ukraine against Russian aggression.
