On September 23, Rahul Gandhi held two public meetings in Jammu and Kashmir. The first was in Surankote, Poonch district, and the second took place in the Shalteng assembly constituency in Srinagar.
Gandhi’s schedule for Wednesday included an interaction with professionals at the Radisson hotel in Jammu at 11:25 AM, followed by a Congress campaign rally at the JK Resort ground at 12:30 PM. Later in the day, he was set to address another rally in Sopore town, Baramulla district, at the government Higher Secondary School ground around 3:25 PM.
Tariq Hameed Karra, the president of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee, is running for election from the central Shalteng constituency. The Congress party and the National Conference (NC) are working together in a pre-poll alliance. According to their agreement, NC will contest in 52 assembly seats, while Congress will contest in 31. They have left two seats uncontested for the CPI-M in the Valley and the Panthers Party in Jammu.
However, they couldn’t agree on five assembly seats in Sopore and other areas in Jammu, so both parties will field candidates in those constituencies, competing against each other. Voting for the second phase of the J&K polls is set for Wednesday, with the final phase on October 1, and vote counting will occur on October 8.
