In the recent Haryana elections, the BJP achieved its best-ever result, winning 48 seats, which is one more than in 2014. The Congress secured 37 seats, while the INLD managed two. The BJP has seen a significant rise in its seats over the years, going from just six in 2000 to 48 now, marking a hat-trick of victories in the state.
Despite facing anti-incumbency challenges, the ruling BJP has retained power and prevented a comeback from the Congress. The election results were announced on Tuesday. The BJP contested 89 out of 90 seats in Haryana, skipping the Sirsa seat, where their ally Gopal Kanda was the sitting MLA, but he lost his seat.
Before 2014, the BJP often played a secondary role to other parties like the INLD and the Haryana Vikas Party. In 2014, the BJP first contested all 90 seats independently and won 47. In 2019, it won 40 seats and formed a government with support from the JJP and some Independents.
The BJP’s rise has been notable, especially since its best previous performance was 16 seats in 1987. In 1991, it won only two seats and in 1996, it won 11. In the 2014 elections, the party did not announce a chief ministerial candidate and campaigned under collective leadership.
To improve their chances, the BJP conducted four Vijay Sankalp Yatras across all 90 assembly segments. Kuldeep Bishnoi, who switched from Congress to BJP in 2022, also contributed to the party’s success. Haryana’s elections were held on October 5.
Thanking voters for their support, Haryana Chief Minister Saini said the people have shown their approval of the government’s policies under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
