In Bihar politics, the NDA coalition is experiencing a build-up of tensions among the BJP, JDU, and Chirag himself, who is demanding the deputy chief minister of Bihar spot. Their rejection of the demand hints at a very interesting shift in the power dynamics.
When it comes to the Lok Janshakti Party led by Chirag Paswan (who was the successor to the late Ram Vilas Paswan), the party has won 19 seats, which is a major achievement, and the party is expecting more recognition. Hence, the leader is pressing for a post of deputy chief minister, increasing pressure on the Bihar BJP JDU leadership.
At the same time, both the BJP and JDU are quite sure of their stance. They think this position is not for the LJP (RV) to take right now. The BJP has already had two deputy CM positions in the outgoing government and does not seem to be ready to part with one.
Moreover, JDU appears to be equally steadfast. As per insiders, it is not only looking to secure the Speaker position and some important posts, but also to have a stronghold in the power centers. This all further complicates Chirag’s wish.
Chirag, for his part, has mentioned he is not really after the post personally. He says that a member of his party could take the post, not necessarily him. His demand, however, indicates that LJP (RV) is aiming for a larger share in the new Bihar government.
The stakes are enormous. The announcement of the government by coalition government is expected soon. The rejection of Chirag’s demand could lead to a strained relationship among the partners. And if it is accepted, it might lead to the discontent of the other allies, like Jitan Ram Manjhi’s group.
For the time being, the Bihar BJP JDU alliance appears to be quite clear about their position. It is still a matter of time before the question of giving in to Chirag’s demand for Deputy CM, Bihar, becomes less uncertain.
The power struggle indicates the fragile nature of coalition politics in Bihar. If NDA does not take LJP (RV) along, its stability is going to get a test very soon.
How do you feel about this issue? Is it going to be Chirag Paswan who becomes the deputy chief minister, or will the Bihar BJP JDU alliance maintain the seat?
