Former President Donald Trump announced that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet him next week during Modi’s three-day visit to the U.S. from September 21 to 23. While Trump criticized India for its high import tariffs, he called Modi a “fantastic man.”
Speaking at a town hall meeting in Flint, Michigan, Trump referred to India as a “big abuser” when it comes to trade. He highlighted that many world leaders, including Modi, are very skilled negotiators. Trump stated, “These people are the sharpest. They’re at the top of their game, and they use it against us.” He mentioned that countries like Brazil and China also impose tough trade practices, with China being the most challenging.
Trump proposed a strategy of “reciprocal trade,” where the U.S. would charge the same tariffs as any country that imposes high tariffs on American goods. He believes this approach will lead to free trade or, at the very least, generate significant revenue for the U.S.
During his visit, Modi will first attend the Quad Leaders’ Summit hosted by President Joe Biden in Wilmington, Delaware, alongside leaders from Australia and Japan. After that, Modi will travel to New York for a large community event in Long Island on September 22 and will address world leaders at the Summit of the Future at the UN headquarters the following day. This visit comes just ahead of the U.S. presidential elections on November 5, where Trump and Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris are competing.
