Three FIRs have been filed against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Chhattisgarh for allegedly hurting the religious sentiments of the Sikh community with comments he made during a recent visit to the US.
The police registered two cases on Thursday at the Civil Lines police station in Raipur and at the Bilaspur Civil Lines police station. A third FIR was filed on Friday at the Kotwali police station in Durg. These cases stem from complaints made by BJP leaders, with similar complaints also submitted at police stations in other districts.
Gandhi is being charged under sections 299 and 302 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which relate to deliberately insulting religious beliefs and intentionally hurting someone’s religious feelings.
BJP spokesperson Amarjeet Singh Chhabra, in his complaint in Raipur, stated that Gandhi questioned whether Sikhs could wear a turban or ‘kada’ and visit Gurdwaras in India. Chhabra argued that this remark has offended the Sikh community, as there are no prohibitions on wearing these items or visiting Gurdwaras in India.
The complaint in Durg was lodged by BJP’s district unit chief, Jitendra Verma. Complaints have also been filed by BJP leaders in other districts, including Durg and Surguja.
Gandhi made his comments during a gathering of Indian Americans in Herndon, Virginia, on September 9.
