On Friday, the Supreme Court rendered its decision on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s plea challenging his arrest in a corruption case related to the now-defunct Delhi Excise Policy of 2021-22. The Bench, comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan, granted bail to Kejriwal, offering him relief under specific terms and conditions.
While announcing the verdict, Justice Bhuyan questioned the urgency of the CBI’s action in arresting Kejriwal immediately after his bail in the Enforcement Directorate (ED) case, especially since the agency had been inactive for 22 months.
To shape the public narrative, Kejriwal has been directed not to make any public statements or comments regarding the ongoing case. He is also required to attend all trial court hearings unless granted an official exemption.
Justice Bhuyan criticized the CBI’s arrest as unjustified and advocated for Kejriwal’s immediate release.
Kejriwal had submitted two petitions to the Supreme Court: one challenging the legality of his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and another seeking bail. Sunita Kejriwal, the Delhi Chief Minister’s wife, celebrated the decision on Twitter, saying, “Congratulations to AAP family! Kudos for staying strong…”
Kejriwal was first arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21, 2024, in connection with a money laundering investigation related to alleged irregularities in the scrapped Delhi Excise Policy of 2021-22. Later, on June 26, 2024, while still in ED custody, he was taken into custody by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) concerning the same excise case.
