Tata Motors Ltd reported a 15% drop in total domestic sales for September, totaling 69,694 units compared to 82,023 units in the same month last year.
Passenger vehicle (PV) sales, which include electric vehicles, reached 41,063 units last month, down 8% from 44,809 units in September 2023. Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd, noted that the PV industry saw over a 5% decline in retail sales compared to last year due to sluggish consumer demand and seasonal factors. Although sales were lower, industry offtake increased in anticipation of a strong festive season, leading to higher channel stock.
Commercial vehicle (CV) sales also fell, totaling 28,631 units in September, down 23% from 37,214 units a year ago. Girish Wagh, Executive Director at Tata Motors, reported that domestic CV sales for Q2 FY25 were 79,931 units, a 19% decrease from the same quarter last year. He pointed out that slowdowns in infrastructure projects, reduced mining activity, and heavy rains impacted demand.
Looking ahead, Wagh expressed optimism that demand would gradually improve in Q3, driven by easing rains, increased infrastructure spending, and the upcoming festive season, particularly in light, medium, and heavy commercial vehicles.
