The Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP), Dwaraka Tirumala Rao, has announced a pause in the Special Investigation Team’s (SIT) inquiry into allegations of adulteration in the famous Tirupati Laddu prasadam. The investigation will remain on hold until October 3, awaiting directives from the Supreme Court. This decision aims to maintain the integrity of the investigation and prevent any potential legal issues, ensuring a fair and impartial process.
During a Supreme Court hearing, Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan criticized Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu for publicly claiming that adulterated ghee was used in making the prasadam. The court noted that there was no solid evidence to back these allegations and questioned the necessity of such public statements while the investigation was ongoing. The justices expressed concern over the potential impact of the Chief Minister’s remarks on the feelings of millions of devotees.
The Supreme Court also suggested the possibility of an independent investigation into the matter. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta was tasked with seeking government instructions on whether such an investigation is warranted. The next court hearing is scheduled for October 3 at 3:30 p.m.
The case centers around claims that adulterated ghee, potentially containing animal fat, was used in preparing the laddus served as prasadam at the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Tirumala. These allegations, which arose during the previous YSRCP government, led to petitions calling for a court-monitored investigation.
